and hence consider the time and distance well worth the effort".
Imports - no longer reimporting RV8s
HS Imports is one of the leading RV8 reimporters in the UK and one members consistently
report "are good people to deal with".
has been repatriating RV8s from Japan for over eight years now. Chris Watkins
runs the firm and previously lived in Japan for many years where he acted as buyer
for several private and trade clients in the UK. For the past three years he has
been back in the UK importing and selling RV8s and other reimports direct to enthusiasts.
He makes it his aim to supply only top grade cars at very fair prices. His sale
price is based on the Japanese auction price of each car. Recently Chris has downscaled
his operation to deal exclusively in RV8s and he now operates his business from
his home in Somerset but offers no less a service - in fact the attention paid
to each RV8 and client surpasses the norm. HS Imports' cars are not "dressed
up" and buyers always get to see the cars exactly as they arrive from Japan
before preparation is started. That preparation always includes any minor cosmetics
the buyer might wish to have done - most notably a replacement set of elm bur
trims inside the car if the original veneer has started to ripple. This does not
affect the price. Most of their sales are made before the cars reach the UK by
providing customers with a full description and a digital photograph of each vehicle
together with a money-back guarantee where a deposit has been paid. HS Imports
bears all the costs of putting the car on the road in the UK without increasing
the pre-agreed sale price once the deposit is paid. Therefore if on arrival in
the UK the car requires new tyres or mechanical attention, HS Imports provides
it all. Recommendation:
Many members have spoken well of Chris Watkins including Mark Seagrove (Woodcote
Green 1070) from Avon and Keith Rowson (Oxford Blue 1764) from Hertfordshire who
report a good service and note Chris is a pleasant person to deal with.

and from Victor Smith who recently had three old AC Delco alternators refurbished
there. Now finding Burghfield Starters can be a little challenging but
the simplest route is to leave the M4 at J12 near Theale and head East on the
old A4 into Reading and then after about two miles you pass the "Welcome
to Reading" sign and a pub called the Horncastle. You then come upon a set
of traffic lights at a junction. Turn sharp right for Burghfield. After little
more than a mile the road narrows and you cross a narrow bridge over the Kennett
and Avon canal and then you cross over the M4. Just follow the road for some five
miles or so. Along a 30mph section of road with housing either side, you will
see a Q8 petrol station on the RHS, sometimes called the Forge Garage.
Burghfield Starter Motor & Alternators have a small workshop behind that filling
station which you can reach in the car through a narrow entrance. There is a parking
space outside their workshop which has a door painted bright blue (see above).
Their website has a link to a very useful map of the local area. (June
had a couple of spare AC DELCO alternators checked and found them as helpful as
ever. (July 2008)

Open Road - Classic Car Hire
The Open Road have a small fleet of
British classic cars for self drive hire - among them two MGs, a 1969 MGB Roadster
and a 1993 MG RV8. So if you are thinking about buying an RV8 and want to see
how they drive or whether you could live with one before handing over your hard
earned cash, then hire one for a day. Or take the MGB and the RV8 out over the
same weekend to compare them back to back. The RV8 we have available is in Woodcote
Green, a reimported Japanese model with air conditioning. It has done less than
12,000 miles before coming back to the UK and is in excellent condition. The MGB
is a 1969 car in Tartan Red with black leather reclining seats and is in excellent
condition too. There are only about 400 RV8s in the UK and we believe ours is
the only one available for hire so it offers you a unique opportunity to drive
and 1995, MG built a limited edition of around 2,000 RV8s which are based on a
modified version of the Heritage body shell of the MGB Roadster and fitted with
a 3.9 litre fuel injected version of the Rover V8 engine mated to a five speed
gearbox. The brakes and suspension were uprated to cope with the extra power.
The interior specification includes seats and door panels in cream leather and
door cappings and a dashboard in burr Elm. If you wish to see how the RV8 compares
with either the MGB Roadster or our V8 powered Triumph Stag, then we are offering
special weekend rates when you can have one car for the Saturday and another for
the Sunday. If you want to take advantage of this offer then call us and we will
fit you in. But be quick as there are only a finite number of weekends! To see

did a very good job, fitting an ash frame inside the roof and renewing all the

Report from Peter Doughty: "I
used this company for a replacement hood on my RV8 in Spring 2006. After considering
many options for a new hood I settled on Chequers. They charge £395 for
a black/blue mohair hood and fitting takes approximately four hours. You can pay
£50 extra to have alternative colours - green, burgundy, brown or beige.
Fitting costs £250 now, although I think I paid a little less than that
at the time. My experience was as follows: I dropped the car off in the morning
at their SE London workshop and picked it up approximately four later. They know
their RV8 hoods very well as they have done quite a few, and were extremely quick
and efficient. The result was a very good quality hood, perfectly fitted. They
are thoroughly recommended, especially at the price charged. As a slight aside,
I used the time by catching a local train to Kew Gardens (the train ticket entitles
half price entry for 2 people) - so made a nice day out of it.

it turned out - an excellent company with a long/established and well regarded
business, who just happen to advertise on Ebay amongst other places".

Servicing and all mechanical work, welding and fabricating,
bodywork and painting and vehicle recovery. The Entune Garage was originally setup
by Mike Entwisle and operated out of a lock-up garage in Swinton. In 1982 the
expanding business relocated to the current building in Stoneclough. The current
owners, Mark Brown and Jon Caldwell who started off as employees at Entune Garage
bought the business after Mike retired in 1999 and renamed the garage Entune 2000.
They continued to offer the old fashioned virtues of enthusiasm, originality and
a job well done but expanded the services to include not only all MG marque cars
but all current makes of car available today. They remain however MG specialists
first and foremost and believe that customer satisfaction and a job well done
are the most essential parts of their work.
Report from Bryan Shacklady
who says "I hit a pothole at the weekend up here near Manchester, and the
car glided to a graceful halt afterwards. Eventually, it turned out to be a lead
leading to the Lumenition amplifier. Again, Entune in Farnworth (who replaced
my Otter switch) were helpful, practical, charged virtually nothing when they
could easily have taken advantage. I would strongly suggest adding them to the
lifeline section of the website. Have a look around their website, as they seem
to have done some work on V8s, and also give me the strong impression of knowing
their way around the V8 in particular, and MGs and other classic cars in general.
When I was there this time, I was speaking to another satisfied customer who has
two cars serviced there. "

Exhaust & Catalyst
EEC began trading in automotive exhausts
in 1973 and strategically changed to manufacturing stainless steel catalytic converters
for European cars in 1997. Through a program of careful expansion and product
development, they are now the largest supplier of direct fit catalytic converters
to the UK aftermarket. EEC stock over 2,000 direct-fit applications supporting
European type approval and continue to expand their core product range (Eurocats)
to meet customer requirements. In addition to their main product they supply universals
catalysts, a comprehensive range of direct-fit Lambda Sensors, pre cat front pipes,
flexible couplings and fitting kits to the automotive sector. The company's operations
and administrative centre is situated in Hampshire on the south coast and they
have an additional manufacturing plant positioned centrally in the UK in Derbyshire
to satisfy increased domestic demand and future growth of the European market.
European Exhaust &
Catalyst is family owned and prides itself on the quality of its products, coupled
with the skills, dedication and loyalty of its employees.
Report from Barry Martin
who says "the price of replacement cats, jigged and welded in to my existing
RV8 pipework by EEC was quoted at £90 plus VAT per side or you can purchase
just the cats and weld in yourself for £60 each. At this price I decided
to replace both. I took the old units to the factory and received a call within
24 hours to say the work was done. The new cats are smaller than the originals
(new technology) giving the added bonus of more air space around the cat for cooling,
and the car is now rattle free and smooth. I would thoroughly recommend this very
large specialist - the production area is massive, with thousands of cats and
exhausts on show."

from Ian Ailes who says "Martin Jay the Distributor Doctor restored the vacuum

Experts in custom built exhaust systems for classic cars.
When Powerflow Exhausts started making exhausts in the early seventies, many of
todays classics were current vehicles! Their comprehensive range of silencers
enables us to offer close matches to virtually every silencer ever made. We are
therefore able to build efficient and durable stainless steel exhaust systems
on most classic cars.
Report from Mike
Benton who needed a silencer inserted in the exhaust system of an MGBGTV8 he recently
bought and an "an internet search flagged up RSR tyres and exhausts in Redhill
as Powerflow stainless exhaust system fitting agents. After enquiries they quoted
£74 to fit an additional in-line silencer box to the existing system which
was welded in. I am very happy with the work and it has made a world of difference
to the exhaust sound quieter but still fruity. They will undertake
a full design and build installation if required. They were also by far the cheapest
around here for fitting and wheel balancing with my supplied Vredesteins."
Specialist at repairing a rebuilding alternators.
Report from Peter Wallis who required a new alternator but rather than just

is far better than a replacement, not to mention the saving and 'every little
helps'. I found him via S & C Electrical also in Harlow who recommended his
services as they advised that a rebuild was better than the replacement and it
went from there. These independent chaps are getting all the more difficulty to

CCS Restorations undertake any task from a simple service or MOT up
to a fully managed restoration. The company is run by Chris Smith
with over 15 years experience working on classic and sports cars,
from an MG or Triumph to a Aston Martin or Jaguar. One
our Pricewatch contributors, Andy Goves, has known Chris for 11 years
and he's undertaken most of the restoration work on his Factory MGBGTV8.
Andy says "Chris has a range of other local contacts including
trimmers and bodyshops and has already recommended me to one of his
many local contacts for a bodyshop. I gave those details to another
V8 Register member in the Somerset area". More

Tony Lake says "I can't
speak too highly of Simon Stuart's operation in Northampton. When
I built a new engine for my V8 in April 2011 I bought a lot of parts
from an old buddy whose hobby was converting roadsters into V8s. 3
blocks, several heads and cranks and sundry other parts for not a
lot of money. I knew of Automotive Services from others. I sorted
thro' what I'd bought, took all three blocks which needed a rebore,
left it to them to pick one, the borer noticed immediately that the
first had a loose liner, it had sunk below the top deck, so that was
scrapped, well done them. They measured all the cranks, one was like
new and just needed a polish, good saving there. They fitted all the
new pistons on to the best set of rods, need to know what you are
doing because the pistons have offset gudgeon pin holes and heat is
required for assembly, quite tricky without the right tools. They
also recut the valve seats and refaced the valves on a pair of Vittesse
heads that were in the lot I bought. I had them take out all the oilway
pluga and core plugs, after machining everything went thro' a proper
hot wash, it is loaded during the day and runs overnight ready for
emptying the next day. Their work cost £1,358 including new
pistons, main and big end bearing shells. To keep the cost down I
did the engine assembly. More than 60,000 miles later it is still
sweet as a nut. Brilliant outfit".
