Ditchman and from Victor Smith who recently had three old AC Delco
alternators refurbished there. Now finding Burghfield Starters
can be a little challenging but the simplest route is to leave
the M4 at J12 near Theale and head East on the old A4 into Reading
and then after about two miles you pass the "Welcome to Reading"
sign and a pub called the Horncastle. You then come upon a set of
traffic lights at a junction. Turn sharp right for Burghfield. After
little more than a mile the road narrows and you cross a narrow bridge
over the Kennett and Avon canal and then you cross over the M4. Just
follow the road for some five miles or so. Along a 30mph section of
road with housing either side, you will see a Q8 petrol station
on the RHS, sometimes called the Forge Garage. Burghfield Starter
Motor & Alternators have a small workshop behind that filling
station which you can reach in the car through a narrow entrance.
There is a parking space outside their workshop which has a door painted
bright blue (see above). Their website has a link to a very useful

An attractive stone built pub with a warm welcome offering Hook
Norton real ales and an excellent menu in both the dining room and
bar. It has a quiet garden for fine summer evenings and ample car
parking. Over the years it has become the traditional venue for an
informal supper for V8 enthusiasts on the Friday evening of the MG
Car Club's annual International MG Weekend Meeting. The Star is located

Open Road - Classic Car Hire
The Open Road have a small fleet of British classic cars for self
drive hire - among them two MGs, a 1969 MGB Roadster and a 1993 MG
RV8. So if you are thinking about buying an RV8 and want to see how
they drive or whether you could live with one before handing over
your hard earned cash, then hire one for a day. Or take the MGB and
the RV8 out over the same weekend to compare them back to back. The
RV8 we have available is in Woodcote Green, a reimported Japanese
model with air conditioning. It has done less than 12,000 miles before
coming back to the UK and is in excellent condition. The MGB is a
1969 car in Tartan Red with black leather reclining seats and is in
excellent condition too. There are only about 400 RV8s in the UK and
we believe ours is the only one available for hire so it offers you
a unique opportunity to drive one!
Between 1993
and 1995, MG built a limited edition of around 2,000 RV8s which
are based on a modified version of the Heritage body shell of the
MGB Roadster and fitted with a 3.9 litre fuel injected version of
the Rover V8 engine mated to a five speed gearbox. The brakes and
suspension were uprated to cope with the extra power. The interior
specification includes seats and door panels in cream leather and
door cappings and a dashboard in burr Elm. If you wish to see how
the RV8 compares with either the MGB Roadster or our V8 powered
Triumph Stag, then we are offering special weekend rates when you
can have one car for the Saturday and another for the Sunday. If
you want to take advantage of this offer then call us and we will

by R&S Coachbuilts at Blackheath four years ago. The car didn't
have a sun roof previously. They did a very good job, fitting an ash
frame inside the roof and renewing all the headlining. After some
initial stiffness, which they warned me about (if easy to start with
it will be no good later after a few days in the hot sun), it has

Report from Peter Doughty: "I used this company for a replacement
hood on my RV8 in Spring 2006. After considering many options for
a new hood I settled on Chequers. They charge £395 for a black/blue
mohair hood and fitting takes approximately four hours. You can pay
£50 extra to have alternative colours - green, burgundy, brown
or beige. Fitting costs £250 now, although I think I paid a
little less than that at the time. My experience was as follows: I
dropped the car off in the morning at their SE London workshop and
picked it up approximately four later. They know their RV8 hoods very
well as they have done quite a few, and were extremely quick and efficient.
The result was a very good quality hood, perfectly fitted. They are
thoroughly recommended, especially at the price charged. As a slight
aside, I used the time by catching a local train to Kew Gardens (the
train ticket entitles half price entry for 2 people) - so made a nice
day out of it.
Chequers advertise on Ebay. Buying an RV8 hood off ebay seems very
dodgey in a way - and I was certainly very wary. However, all it really
is a medium to make contact, and then you conduct the business/transaction
just as you would any other. As it turned out - an excellent company
with a long/established and well regarded business, who just happen
to advertise on Ebay amongst other places".

Russell needed a replacement horn push for his MGBGTV8 and found it
was an NLA item so posted a note on the V8BB seeking help. Alan Spence
recommended Mechspec for secondhand spares so Mike duly contacted
them. Dave Parker had a secondhand horn push available and mailed
it out and Mike reports the replacement arrived the next day. It was
obviously secondhand but perfectly serviceable. Mike comments "hearing
an item is 'NLA' can be a heartsinking experience as you just know
there is one out there somewhere so I would endorse Alan Spence's
advice via the V8BB to 'give these people a try'."

get them from the usual RV8 spares specialists and then saw them in
a magazine supplied by a leading classic car parts supplier, Bresco
Vehicle Services Limited at Loughborough. Hugh says "the female
part is identical but the screw is 1/4" longer and the head is
not smooth/but patterned."

Martin who says "the price of replacement cats, jigged and welded
in to my existing RV8 pipework by EEC was quoted at £90 plus
VAT per side or you can purchase just the cats and weld in yourself
for £60 each. At this price I decided to replace both. I took
the old units to the factory and received a call within 24 hours to
say the work was done. The new cats are smaller than the originals
(new technology) giving the added bonus of more air space around the
cat for cooling, and the car is now rattle free and smooth. I would
thoroughly recommend this very large specialist - the production area
is massive, with thousands of cats and exhausts on show."

to fit an additional in-line silencer box to the existing system which
was welded in. I am very happy with the work and it has made a world
of difference to the exhaust sound quieter but still fruity.

balancing with my supplied Vredesteins."

Report from Peter Wallis who required a new alternator but rather
than just buy a replacement he had his alternator rebuilt by Steve
Roffey for £48 ex wks (price at October 2010). Peter says "the
quality of the original unit is far better than a replacement, not
to mention the saving and 'every little helps'. I found him via S
& C Electrical also in Harlow who recommended his services as
they advised that a rebuild was better than the replacement and it

Report from Bill McCullough who says "JR V8 rebuilt the box in
my MGBGTV8 conversion earlier this year, after I had replaced the
cluster gear and input shaft subsequent to breaking teeth on both
gears. (I suspect ATF caused the damage). My attempts with home made
shims left a lot to be desired, and rather than inflict further damage
on the gearbox I took it to JR V8. The cost was reasonable and the
expensive noises have almost vanished as the gears settle in to the
new shimming - I am impressed. I would have no hesitation in encouraging
anyone needing advice or work done on the V8 engine or its gearboxes

about two years ago! Hillsalive is a husband and wife partnership
and their quality is very good. It fits neatly and very well into
the boot compartment. One 'large wedge' shaped "box" and
one 'large deep' "box" which fits into the offside area
of the boot. There is also plenty of room either side of the luggage

Mike Dunlop reports "just had my radiator recored by a company
in Reading and they did a lovely job. It's just a two man team (father
& son) named Ray and Steve, they were very helpful, friendly and
did a fast turn round. I gave them the radiator on Tuesday and it

Tony Lake says "I can't speak too highly of Simon Stuart's operation
in Northampton. When I built a new engine for my V8 in April 2011
I bought a lot of parts from an old buddy whose hobby was converting
roadsters into V8s. 3 blocks, several heads and cranks and sundry
other parts for not a lot of money. I knew of Automotive Services
from others. I sorted thro' what I'd bought, took all three blocks
which needed a rebore, left it to them to pick one, the borer noticed
immediately that the first had a loose liner, it had sunk below the
top deck, so that was scrapped, well done them. They measured all
the cranks, one was like new and just needed a polish, good saving
there. They fitted all the new pistons on to the best set of rods,
need to know what you are doing because the pistons have offset gudgeon
pin holes and heat is required for assembly, quite tricky without
the right tools. They also recut the valve seats and refaced the valves
on a pair of Vittesse heads that were in the lot I bought. I had them
take out all the oilway pluga and core plugs, after machining everything
went thro' a proper hot wash, it is loaded during the day and runs
overnight ready for emptying the next day. Their work cost £1,358
including new pistons, main and big end bearing shells. To keep the
cost down I did the engine assembly. More than 60,000 miles later
it is still sweet as a nut. Brilliant outfit".

Ian Ailes noticed a problem with the seat
belt on his Factory MGBGTV8 (1561 Glacier White). The buckle kept
falling down between the seat and handbrake making it a pain to get
to. It turned out to be a missing Belleville washer, a dished, sprung
washer which provides friction to the bolted fitting on the gearbox
tunnel. I found this company not far from where I live.

website they say "all seat belts are manufactured under European
standard R16 and under ISO9002 quality control procedures and are

John Fisher says "I have just had my V8 wheels refurbished by
a company called "The Wheel Specialist" in Leicester. They
did not strip the wheels into component parts, but shot blast the
chrome from the steel band, powder coat the rims and paint the alloy
centres and then diamond cut. Whilst not returning the wheels to "as-new"
specification, I think they are acceptable as an everyday alternative".
