Recent
replacement tyre tests - an update
Our last replacement tyre review was released on the V8 Website back
in 2013. It was based on detailed tyre tests carried out by the Which?
magazine in the UK and some feedback from V8 members in a survey.
As the choice of replacement tyres is always a topical subject we
have an update provided by Victor Smith.

Tyre
test reviews seen in 2026
These are the reviews I could find from an online search. The
ranking of the tyres tested in each test are shown in the table
of test results above. The tyre tests I found were made using
modern cars and the tyre sizes tested had a lower profile than
those which are the standard size specified in the manuals for
each MGV8 model.
Assumption
An assumption made in this review is that the characteristics
of tyre brands and types fitted to the modern cars used for
the tests - like wet and dry grip, roadholding, braking performance
and ride comfort - will tend to be seen in the same brands of
tyre but with the different tyre sizes we have for our MGV8s.
Not a perfect carry-over of test results but it feels like a
fair assumption.
Search
for the availability of the tyres from suppliers in the UK
I have made a series of online searches on the websites of the
leading replacement tyre suppliers and found that not many offer
the two tyre sizes needed for our MGV8s in the tyre brands and
types that appear in the top 6 rankings of the tests. The results
of my searches are alongside.

Tyre choices for MGV8 owners based on test results
Continental Contact tyres did well in the tests carried out
by ADAC, Autodoc, Autobild and EVO. Those test results reflect
the similar findings from the survey of tyre test reviews I
did in 2013, but often in posts on forums enthusiasts will speak
fondly of other brands they have used. But when replacing a
10 year old set of tyres in many cases the feel and performance
of very nearly any brand of new tyre as a replacement will feel
an improvement!

This
review is not perfect, not least because of the assumption that
brands of tyre in different sizes tested on modern cars will
have similar performance characteristics in the different tyre
sizes fitted to MGBGTV8s or MGRV8s. But if you feel the carry-over
of test results is a fair assumption then the review provides
useful information on replacement tyres for a classic car like
an MGBGTV8 or MGRV8 which can be considered alongside the individual
views of MGV8 owners of how they feel various tyre brands perform
well on their MGV8.

recommendations on replacement tyres for MGV8s will be welcome
