A
full road closure was proposed by the energy distribution firm
SSEN Transmission for a three-mile stretch of road near Dundonnell
to allow for a major subsea electricity cable from the Western
Isles to be connected to the national grid. That closure would
have resulted in an 80 mile (130km) diversion. Some locals
feared for the future of their businesses, should the original
plans have gone ahead but after concerns were raised about the
original proposals, revised plans to close a three mile section
of the A832, part of the North Coast 500 route, were offered
which would allow work to be carried out safely, whilst minimising
the impact on the local community. Work
is due to start on 19th January 2026.
