Currently
if your vehicle was built before 1st January 1984 and it is
registered as an Historic vehicle, you can renew your road tax
at the NIL rate from 1st April 2024.
You must apply for an exemption to stop paying vehicle road
tax (VED). This is sometimes called "putting a vehicle
into the Historic tax class". To be eligible
for Historic class the vehicle must have:
o |
been
built or first registered more than 40 years ago |
o |
had
no substantial changes made to the vehicle
in the last 30 years, for example replacing the chassis,
body, axles or engine to change the way the vehicle works |

New
petition calling for VED exemption for cars between 20 and
40 years old
A new Parliament Petition calling for a reduction
in vehicle excise duty (or road tax) for cars aged between
20 to 40 years old has been created by an enthusiasts, Claire
Knight who says "there are vehicles within the 20 to
40 year age bracket that are well loved, modern classics and
without a reduction in road tax we may see these vehicles
disappear from our roads". She says "as the owner
of a 20 year old modern classic, which is seldom driven more
than 1,000 miles a year, I have just received my vehicle tax
reminder and even if I were to SORN the vehicle for 6 months
of the year, it would still cost me £180 for six months
access to the road and I would pay £320 to take advantage
of the occasional sunny day year round".
The petition has already attracted over 4,000 people signing
up but needs 10,000 to get an official Government response
and 100,000 for it to be debated in Parliament. The petition
closes on 22nd July 2024. A similar petition in 2021 called
for an extension of the current rolling 40 year VED exemption
to cars that are 30 years old. It received over 14,000 supporters
signing up but the Government said it had no plans to make
any changes.
