What
does a typical Dunlop composite wheel look like? In an email exchange
between Peter Ellis (a longstanding V8 Register member and former editor
of Safety Fast!) and Keith Belcher (one of our two Pricewatch volunteers),
Peter provided a good quality photo of his wheels which were refurbished a while
ago. Photos
Note,
original Dunlop composite wheels had very fine lateral machinings across
the face of the features in the alloy centres.

are your options faced with corroded Dunlop composites? An increasing number
of MGBGTV8 enthusiasts have seen their Dunlop composite wheels developing moderate
or serious levels of corrosion on the chromed steel rims and have sought advice
on where they can get them refurbished. Well since Motor Wheel Services (MWS)
at Langley near Slough ceased providing their high quality and skilled refurbishment
service a few years ago the reality is the refurbishment of Dunlop composites
is no longer available. So
what are your options?
A comprehensive article, due out in the four
page V8 Newsletter in the August 2018 issue of Safety Fast!, will set out the
available options with corroded Dunlop composites. Of course top of the list
is to take care of your wheels to avoid corrosion - keep them clean of road
film, polish them and when the car is garaged spray the wheels with WD40 to try
and discourage moisture and the development of any corrosion on the rims. | Referring
to the photo
of one of his Dunlop composites, Peter Ellis notes "the chrome rims (which
were not too bad) were polished and the alloy centres were shot blasted, painted
and then mirror polished (the 'shiny bits' only) so the wheels do not look identical
to the original which had the 'shiny bits' machined". |
