Timeline display Fellow V8 member Dennis Wharf is organising a key
feature of MG90 - a Timeline of all production MGs from the earliest to the current
models. We will have four MGV8s there each day - see the eight cars reviewed below. | MGBGTV8
- Pre-Production Development car This car was built at the Abingdon plant
in 1972 to evaluate the Rover P6 3.5 litre V8 engine. This car (Glacier White
0096) has its original registration, MMO 229L. As a development car it has many
unique features notably the engine bay was modified to accommodate the V8 engine
by reverse welding segments cut out of the inner wing. It became a template for
production MGBs thereafter. The car reached 222 kph (138 mph) during tests in
France by Alec Houslow, foreman of the Development Department and former riding
mechanic to the racing legend Nuvolari. The car is owned by Clive Wagerfield.

- early production car This is an early production V8 (Glacier 0199) V8
at the Abingdon plant in May 1973, so it qualified for the tax class change from
PLG to Historic and a free tax disc from 1st April 2014. It has Navy Blue interior
trim. It was retained by Leyland for the first year of its life, being displayed
in the Exhibition Hall at Longbridge before being despatched to a dealer in Warwickshire
and registered in 1974 for use as the Managing Director's car. It has the distinctive
Dunlop composite wheels (steel rim with an alloy centre), and has been owned by
Gavin Bailey since 1992. It has just completed an extensive 10-year restoration
including all bodywork, mechanical and interior, and will shortly leave the UK
when Gavin Bailey emigrates to Arkansas, USA.

- Development car DEV2 This is the second Development Car for the RV8 model,
known as "DEV2", built into a new MGB bodyshell at Snitterfield by Mark
Gamble and the RV8 development team and finished in Flame Red. It featured an
up-rated fuel injected V8 engine, brakes and suspension and was used for cold
climate testing in Scandinavia in Autumn 1991 and later for engine cooling tests.
The car has covered only 29,000 miles and has had three previous owners - Trevor
Ripley on two occasions. The current owner is Stephen Dent.

- production car in White Gold This is an early production RV8 (0283) and
the first production car finished in White Gold. It was registered in May 1993
and has had three previous owners, the first being the chairman of BAE, then the
owner of MG Rover. The car has covered 44,000 miles from new. The car has had
refurbished paint work at Specialist Automotive Services in Sabden Lancashire.
As these cars were hand built and the panel fit was not perfect this was rather
difficult to improve without making the car look non-standard and frankly too
good, so a fine balance was achieved. The wheel refurbishment was completed by
Rino Wheels in Preston to a high standard. The car is owned by Tony Arnold.

260V8 This estate version is the ZT 260 SE V8 facelift model in Chagall
Blue, a rare bodywork colour as Geoff recently discovered, only three were built
in this colour. It has light grey Alcantara seat facings, the full SE specification
and some further extras including a Harman/Kardon hi-fi system and a detachable
towbar. The published price for a car with this specification in February 2004
was over £35,000. This car (VIN 621) was first registered in September 2004
and whilst it has had several owners, the car has covered under 31,000 miles.
The car is owned by Geoff Edwards.

400SE Launched in 2003,
the rear wheel drive ZT 260 V8 was powered by a 260PS 4.6-litre V8 engine with
Tremec's TR3650 five-speed manual gearbox able to deliver class-leading torque
and acceleration. The engine is Ford's proven 4.6-litre V8 used in the iconic
Ford Mustang. This saloon version of the model is one of only four ZT V8s finished
in Monogram Shot Silk Shot Silk. This car started life as a MG ZT 260 and the
supercharger upgrade is what makes it a "400". There are around 25-30
cars that have been upgraded with either a Rousch (385) or Kenne Bell (400) supercharger
and it was a planned factory option intended from mid 2005. This car has a Kenne
Bell 2.1 twin screw supercharger fitted by Brian Luti at Dreadnought Garage in
Scotland. It has Monogram Ash/Smokestone leather seats and trim. It was registered
in September 2006 and has had one previous owner. The car (VIN 0820) has covered
just about 40,000 miles. The car is owned by John Newey.

SV-R This SV-R (VIN 0152) in Red Hot Kinetic has Gunsmoke leather with
Royal Black Alcantara trim. It has front and rear discs with four pot calipers,
double wishbone independent front and rear coil spring suspension, ABS, PAS, OZ
two piece five spoke alloy wheels and a five speed Tremec TR3650 manual gearbox
and electronic traction control. It was registered in September 2004 and has had
two previous owners. The car has covered just under 12,000 miles. This car came
with polished carbon side vents, dual action 4 belt 3 point harness, climate control,
electric seat height adjustment and electric windows. It is believed some 86 cars
were built. The car is owned by Stan Aleksandrowicz.

producing 465 bhp, a 6 speed gearbox and many other mods. It was registered in
May 2004 as the MG press car and featured on the cover of Top Gear
magazine, amongst others. It has since had two owners. The car has covered just
over 30,000 miles and enjoys regular use, both on the road and MGs on Track trackdays.
