| On
Saturday 6 June 2015 the V8 Register hosted the 2015 "V8 Technical Day"
at the John Thornley Suite at Kimber House. Thirty five members attended the day
which comprised a series of presentations from speakers on the technical side
of owning V8 MGs.
Mike Macartney - Building a V8 Roadster First
up was Mike Macartney, well known to members for his excellent series of articles
posted on the V8 website covering his current restoration project, a V8 roadster.
However at the seminar he talked through his previous restoration of an MGBGTV8,
including his planning, budgeting and management of the rebuild, as well as more
detailed stories of the challenges involved! The car's owner, Dougald MacNeill,
an existing member was present with the car and members were then able to examine
it and see the quality of Mike's work. Reports
Mark
Wanstall - Hoyle Suspension upgrades Next up was Mark Wanstall of Fisher
Services. Mark is a long term owner of MG V8s and runs a very successful restoration
business. However in 2014 he bought out John Hoyle's engineering business supplying
high quality upgrades for MGs with independent rear suspension, front suspension
and brake upgrades. Mark brought along examples of the Hoyle upgrades, the quality
of which were very impressive. One of Mark's customers, Richard Martin, brought
along his V8 Roadster which has all the Hoyle parts fitted, and members were able
to examine it in detail. More
Nic
Houslip - update on V8 cooling issues Nic Houslip finished off the morning
with a short update on cooling issues for V8s, always a favourite! And which prompted
a varied discussion of individual's own cooling problems.
George Wilder
and Chris Allan - "MG RV8 The Manufacturing Story" In the afternoon
George Wilder and Chris Allan gave a fascinating presentation of the story behind
their book, "MG RV8 The Manufacturing Story". This has been a runaway
success with over 500 copies sold and has led to thier working on a next edition
covering the "Development Story" of the RV8. They finished with video
clips of the RV8 crash testing never before seen in public. See a review of the
Manufacturing Story book. More
Various
updates on V8 prices, VED exemption and ethanol Our day concluded with
some updates from Nic Houslip and Victor Smith on V8 prices, VED exemption and
the move to ethanol petrol. All were of great interest to members.
Our
initiative - the Tax Paid Disc - was launched
during the final session.
Most importantly thanks to Debbie Brading,
our register secretary, who put together a first rate spread for lunch as well
as tea and coffee throughout. We were blessed with excellent weather which enabled
a leisurely examination of members' cars in the summer sunshine during lunch and
the tea breaks. All in all a very successful day. | V8
