What evidence can I have of the current road tax status of a UK registered vehicle?
With the end of the UK paper tax disc in October 2014, the DVLA Vehicle Enquiry System (VES) on the GOV.UK website has become a main source of documentary record of the current road tax status of a UK registered vehicle. Everyone who has a taxed vehicle is entitled to be able to rely on it to show the UK vehicle excise duty or VED status to anyone who has a need to know it. That might be friends borrowing the vehicle, repairers who need to drive the vehicle for testing or, perhaps more importantly, police and various officials monitoring your vehicle at home and abroad. Here we suggest two sources of evidence - a copy of the report from a DVLA Vehicle Enquiry made online and one of our Tax Paid Discs showing the current road tax status and above it the expiry date in the traditional large font as a useful reminder of when renewal is due. The information reproduced on that disc will come from either the DVLA email confirming road tax has been paid using their online system or similar information from the till receipt issued by Post Office counter staff if you obtain your road tax there. A tip from Jim Gibson is you should take a photocopy of the Post Office till receipt because the text on the receipt fades with time so becomes useless. Information sheet

Vehicle Enquiry System (VES) report as evidence of the current UK road tax status of the vehicle
With the end of the paper tax disc in the UK in October 2014, the main way of checking the current road tax status of a UK registered vehicle is the VES service on the GOV.UK website. Our advice to members is it's worth carrying a copy of the VES report in your car as the best available evidence that your car is in fact taxed and has a current MOT. A copy of that report comes with each disc. Advice
