Ian
Ailes reports that "unfortunately the bottom
hose on my car split as I parked up at the MG Day
at Brooklands on Easter Sunday 14th April. So much
for fitting a Kevlar hose! It was only 5 years old
and came from SC Parts at Crawley. The old hose,
which I should have left on (and in!!!) the car,
was also Kevlar and had much thicker walls. Fortunately
fellow V8 member Philip James had a brand new spare
hose in his boot. |
On
hearing this news, Peter Beadle responded "The
Kevlar reinforced hose is fine as an "Emergency
Get You Home" hose or if none other is available
but a good quality string reinforced rubber or silicon
replacement hose is better. Both Moss Europe and
Clive Wheatley
have invested in tooling and stock to make them
with either string reinforcement - as original,
which stops them "Splitting", or in silicon
as used in competition. Five years ago neither of
these types of hose were
available so the Kevlar hose was then only option.
So my advice is NOW is the time to inspect them
and if in doubt then change them. These hoses may
be more expensive - Bottom hose GRH511 and Top hose
GRH512 at around £33 for the pair from Moss
Europe but new engines don't come cheap. When a
Kevlar reinforced hose splits, it lets go in a big
way and quickly, losing all your water. The other
types of hose start weeping long before they split."
Clive Wheatley sourced complete sets of string reinforced
and silicon replacement cooling hoses for the MGBGTV8
and RV8 models. It is worth changing all the hoses
when you replace a top or bottom - those two are
easily changed but very often the more difficult
smaller hoses are left hoping they will hang on.
Bite the bullet and change the whole set, it's far
safer. More |
