Route
to Hook Norton from M40 J10
For over
25 years Victor Smith has enjoyed this route on his way to visit the
brewery at Hook Norton and then enjoy lunch at the Pear Tree nearby
with fellow V8 enthusiasts. It is a wonderful start to the annual
International MG Meeting at Silverstone. (5.7.07)
Leaving the M40 at
Junction 10 (marked A43 for Northampton and Silverstone), you travel
north east a very short distance on the A43 and then turn left at
a roundabout and go north west to the village of Aynho. As you near
Aynho you reach a sharp left bend and then some speed reduction layouts.
Aynho is an attractive village.
As you leave the Aynho village you turn sharp right, drop down a hill
and turn left on the way down. A straight road is ahead of you with
a bridge in the distance which takes the M40 over the road. You pass
under the M40 and then head west on good country roads through another
attractive village, Deddington. As you leave the centre of the village
you reach a set of traffic lights where you go straight on. The road
is then a wonderful route through farming country and several sleepy
villages. At one stage you cross the canal but approach the narrow
bridge with the greatest of care.
On reaching the junction with the A361 (the Banbury Road) turn left
and after a mile or so, turn right for Swerford and Hook Norton. It
is fair to say the route from this point is a maze of narrow lanes
but follow the Hook Norton signs and you arrive in the village. It
is essential you drive with the possibility of meeting riders and
pedestrians on these narrow roads.
Once in Hook Norton village turn left and pass the Sun Inn and then
the church, following the directions in the detail map below to the
Brewery at the west end of the village. As you make your way to the
Brewery you pass the Pear Tree Inn.

The Pear Tree
Inn is at the end of the narrow lane you enter to make your way
to the brewery - yes it is called "Brewery Lane"! The attractive
pub and serves Hook Norton real ales and delicious bar snacks including
ploughmans with a large slice of Stilton. The pub lookks out on a
triangular green and has a garden which is a pleasant place to have
lunch when the weather is fine. |
