Replacement headlamps for original sealed beams

The original headlamps fitted at the MG Factory were domed sealed beams which provide a modest view of a country road ahead at night, so an upgrade with a Halogen conversion is welcome. But the first step is to find a good set of 7” reflector units that can take Halogen bulbs. Some kits come with flat lenses but domed lenses similar to the original sealed beam units are available. They take a 60/55W standard Halogen bulb which provides a good dipped beam which has a warm feel like the ageing original sealed beam. Peter Spurrs' photo alongside compares the halogen upgrade as a replacement with the original sealed beam lamp.

MGBGTV8 Halogen headlight conversion with twin relays
A worthwhile but subtle upgrade involving installing twin relays to remove the heavy electrical load on the ageing main lighting switch and the stalk dip/main beam switch was highlighted by Peter Spurrs in a note describing his installation of the relays using individual parts purchased from an auto electrical supplier. Mike Howlett added “definitely fit relays, not only because you minimise the voltage drop but because it preserves your original switches. Clicking on your headlamps puts a 10amp load across the puny brass contacts in the main switch and the dip switch".
