Longstanding V8 member, Walter Kallenberg, has been coming to the annual MG Car Club long weekend meeting at Silverstone since 1981 and has enjoyed the V8 BBQs usually held on the Saturday evening alongside the V8 Marquee. He often brings supplies of German sausages with him. Well for MGLive! 2011 Walter and Brigitte are planning an informal BBQ on Saturday evening alongside the V8 Marquee at Silverstone Circuit. Any V8 members and their friends who would like to join the BBQ, do get in touch with Walter and Brigitte for further information and to coordinate your plans. Contact Walter Kallenberg

Background to the V8 BBQ on Saturday evening at the Club's annual MGLive! meeting at Silverstone
In the four or so years to 2009 the V8BBQ was generously sponsored by Clive Wheatley and his team of volunteer cooks with free beer and wine donated by several fellow members. The delicious suppers cooked by Clive's volunteers were very popular with V8 members and their friends and gradually the scale of the event grew substantially so that it involved a major exercise for Clive's team in bringing a large BBQ cooking range to the event along with large quantities of provisions purchased and prepared by the ladies. V8 members were grateful for the generosity of Clive and the team as the workload was enormous. But sadly in 2010 Clive's team were not able to provide the V8 BBQ.

For MGLive! 2010 the V8 Committee looked at alternatives and decided that replicating a V8 BBQ on a similar large scale as before with covered accommodation, possibly at a location outside the Circuit, was not something we could do. So the decision was made that those V8 members who wished to have an informal BBQ would be able to do so alongside the V8 Marquee in the same way as many other Club members attending the event do all around the Circuit. So an alternative informal BBQ where V8 members joined together for a BBQ alongside the V8 Marquee where they provided and cooked their suppers together was announced. Fortunately the weather was fine but the scale of the DIY event was much smaller but enjoyable.

For MGLive! 2011 news received from Club Office early in the year guided our plans. We heard from Bill Silcock (the previous head of the MGLive! team and currently the Club Vice Chairman) earlier this year that they recognised the Main Club event on Saturday evening at MGLive! provided in previous years was not seen as a very good event, so they were devising a new format which would provide two events - a more formal dinner in one of the comfortable reception buildings at the Circuit and an informal buffet and music event so members would have a choice.

For the formal dinner Bill indicated he recognised the successful format the V8 Register has had for its periodic anniversary dinners where the dynamics of the evening are subtly managed to avoid tedious speeches and presentations was the way to go. I said that in principle a Club dinner on the Saturday evening at the Circuit on that basis would be something I felt I could recommend to fellow V8 Committee members, subject to our knowing more of the detailed format for the evening. When the V8 Committee met earlier this year they supported the idea of the V8 Register taking several tables at the dinner and subsequently Julian White (Club General Manager) has let us have more details of the evening. So the V8 tables at the Club's Saturday evening dinner have been promoted on the V8 website.
