Will
there be a fuel duty rise in January 2013?

2013 to cancel the planned fuel duty increase due to have come
in for August 2013. More
Figures
from the House of Commons Library this week showed that for
a typical litre of petrol costing 138.3p, a total of 81p
almost 60 per cent now goes to the UK Treasury
in fuel duty and VAT. And that is before the planned 3p increase
in January 2013! On a full MGBGTV8 tank that would be an increase
of almost £2.

George
Osborne, the UK Chancellor of the Exchequer, is
coming under increasing pressure to put off a planned
3p/litre increase in motor fuel duty due in January
2013. When he has come under similar pressure on
previous occasions he has postponed or scrapped
several planned rises in fuel duty, most recently
the rise that would have been seen in August this
year. In June he made the announcement saying "we
will stop any rise in fuel duty this August, and
freeze it for |
the
rest of the year. Then Mr Osborne told MPs
then that "we are on the side of working families
and businesses and this will fuel our recovery at
this very difficult economic time for the world".
Earlier this week Ed Balls, the Labour shadow chancellor,
said the scheduled rise should be called off because
it would put an unfair burden on household finances
and small businesses. The Daily Telegraph reported
on Thursday this week that the Labour party
will put its proposal to a vote in the House of
Commons tomorrow (Monday) when George Osborne will
be challenged to fund a delay in next years
planned rise in fuel duty by closing loopholes in
the tax system.
The irony not missed by many is the planned rise
in fuel duty was introduced by the previous Labour
party when last in government.
