What
is behind current MGCGT prices?
To
what extent might the relative production figures be a factor
in the price difference between MGCGTs and MGBGTV8s? Well following
the V8BB thread David Leggeat sent some figures to the V8 Webmaster
which are interesting. Although total MGC production, both Roadster
and GT, was around 9,000 cars, a large proportion of production
was exported, mainly to the USA. David says "although 9,002
MGCs were produced in total, only 2,030 MGCGTs were produced
for the home market compared to 2,584 MGBGTV8s. (Ref: A D Clausager
'Original MGB with MGC and MGB GT V8'). Also the survival rate
of the V8 is probably higher because the V8 is a relatively
newer car. A number of Cs were scrapped around 20 years ago
as parts unique to it became difficult to source and CGTs have
been used to donate parts to restore the more valuable MGC Roadster
models."

The
above data is from A D Clausager's book above and 'MGC - Abingdon's
Grand Tourer' by G. Robson gives similar figures.
So based on these MGC production figures only 2,030 MGCGTs were
supplied to the UK market, some 45.5% of total GT production.
That's 21.5% less MGCGTs than the MGBGTV8 production supplied
to the UK market.
But if you compare chrome bumper MGBGTV8s with MGCGTs supplied
to the UK market the figures look quite different - 10% more
MGCGTs than chrome bumper V8s.

One
topic discussed by a couple of V8 enthusiasts at
the International MG Show at Stoneleigh the other
weekend was how the current pricing of MGCGTs compares
with that for MGBGTV8s. Recent prices seen in advertisements
for MGCs do seem to be higher by quite a growing
margin which is difficult to fathom when you consider
how good the spares availability is for the V8.
Naturally V8 enthusiasts may be slightly biased
when it comes to comparing the models, but the performance
of a V8 and even the higher power to weight ratio
are strong factors too.
The topic was raised on the V8 Bulletin Board and
Simon Pickford responded saying "part of the
problem might be the number of V8 conversions around
whilst all the Cs are genuine items. That being
said the V8 is a far superior car to the MGC - I
had one!"
The MGCGTs for sale alongside are from the Beech
Hill Garage advertisement in the March 2011 issue
of Safety Fast! - they range from £8,995 to
£14,995.

The analysis
above is based simply on the MGCGT prices taken from the Beech
Hill Garage adverts above and on our online MGBGTV8 price guide
plus information from the recent Bonham's auction at Oxford
where a top condition rubber bumper MGBGTV8 went for £10,500
plus buyers premium and tax - a total of £12,075. Other
MGCGTs seem to be advertised at similar prices but without a
physical inspection it is difficult to know which condition
grade a car is in. Also the analysis above simply compares chrome
bumper MGBGTV8s with MGCGTs but of course there were another
735 rubber bumpered MGBGTV8s supplied to the UK market in the
1970s.
But we do not have current survival rates for the three models
- knowing the numbers of cars surviving is a key statistic.
But if a surviving car is not up for sale then it is not part
of the active supply of that model in the classic car market
and playing a part in the current supply and demand balance
and hence determining market prices for the respective models.
What can we conclude based on the this preliminary information?
Well the analysis suggests there is some basis for believing
MGCGT prices are higher than those for MGBGTV8s but why that
is the case is not clear. David Leggeat ended his email with
the MGC production stats saying "some MGC Roadsters are
for sale at higher prices than RV8s which I can't understand.
Perhaps these Cs are in exceptional condition." Do fellow
members have any views on MGC prices?
