Concerns
with ethanol in motor fuel

There
are similar concerns in the marine world. With petrol
outboards you must empty the float chamber before
the winter layup as these new unleaded fuels attract
water and evaporate leaving some dreadful varnish
in the carburettor. The contents of the tank need
to be drained for similar reasons. The fuel, if
|
left
over the winter will lose volatility to the point
where it will not fire the engine in the spring.
I had a breakdown with one of my Seagulls due to
the formation of a blob of jelly at the bottom of
the float chamber, where the jet picks up fuel -
blocked it completely!
Do
not start me on boat diesel fuel. This has problems
where it contains some biofuel component as it causes
water to form in winter and algae grow at the interface
between the water and bio muck. Result - your boat
engine gets stopped suddenly by clogged filters
full of the bugs. I only use the old marine red
diesel but its getting hard to find. I also dose
it with a product called Fuel Set to kill the bugs.
As a consequence I have so far not had any problem
and the sample I draw off each Spring from my main
tank is clean as a whistle.
We
live in strange times! I have decided to strip and
clean the SUs on my MGB Roadster and have a go.
If they pack up I will send them off to Burlen to
rebuild them with some of their biofuel resistant
bits. |
