V8 Gathering at the Shoulder of Mutton on Hazeley Heath

The mix of over twenty MGV8s attending the V8 Gathering on Sunday 18th May 2003 was equally spilt between MGBGTV8s and RV8s. Tim Hipwell (Oxford Blue 1133) was up from Devon visiting his mother near Hook and he fell into a discussion with Peter Wallis (Nightfire Red 2178) from Basingstoke and Gavin Bailey (BRG 0766). Brian Moyse (BRG 1714) from Guildford was describing how he had changed a front wheel bearing on Friday using one of Clive Wheatley's money saving repair kits. Stephen Beale (Le Mans Green 0786) from Cippenham in Berkshire was a welcome member - his RV8 is on the right in the banner photo above. He is a longstanding V8 enthusiast and a regular marshall at MG Car Club race meetings, and is planning to enter the V8 Track Laps session on Sunday 22nd June at the MG Car Club's International MG Meeting at Silverstone. Gordon Hesketh-Jones (the organiser of the V8 Track Laps) tells me that the applications are coming in thick and fast, so there will be a very good turnout for our V8 25th Anniversary session on the track!

David Shattock (Glacier White 0294) from Lewes in Sussex with the ex Leslie coombes V8 is a regular at these V8 Gatherings together with another regular, Geoff Robe (Harvest Gold 1768) from Tadley near Reading (above).

Bill Ratcliffe (Carribean Blue 0437) from Storriington in West Sussex had just returned from a tour to the South of France in the RV8 where they had the hood down for most of the time with the fine weather.

Back

Clive Wheatley (Flame Red 0294) from Wolverhampton called in on his way back from the spares fair at Beaulieu and found the beer at the Shoulder of Mutton in good form. For Bryan Ditchman (Caribbean Blue 0265, Bracken 1012 and Blaze 1059), the Shoulder of Mutton is his "local" and whenever he is close to the pub his hand naturally assumes the tankard holding position! It was good to see Bracken 1012 after Bryan's top to bottom refurbishment. Nigel Bruce another local popped in during lunch.

The Shoulder of Mutton is a splendid country pub on Hazeley Heath. Former V8 owner and landlord, Steve Thorning, was as welcoming as ever.

Tim Hipwell (Oxford Blue 1133) from Devon is off to the 24 heures du Mans the weekend before Silverstone and then the Dordogne so will miss the V8 25th Anniversary celebrations.
